The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) states that laser hair removal is the fourth most requested non-invasive aesthetic procedure in the United States.
According to the ASPS, each year, more than a million people undergo laser hair removal treatments, with the majority of them adding the procedure to their beauty routine after just one session.
At Deja You Medical, we offer hair removal laser options so that you don’t have to worry about waxing or shaving. Read on to see how laser hair removal can help.
What Is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is a non-invasive aesthetic procedure that uses a concentrated beam of light called a laser to get rid of hair. The laser radiates a light that the melanin, a pigment found in hair, absorbs. This light becomes heat, which damages the hair follicles. The damage prevents new hair from growing or delays it from doing so.
Common treatments areas include:
- Upper lip
- Bikini line
Although the procedure is not permanent, results last longer than you can expect from shaving or waxing.
For the hair removal laser procedure to be most successful, the hair must be in its growth stage. Since hair follicles are at different stages at different times, most people need a few sessions to see optimal results.
Laser hair removal is most effective for individuals with dark hair because it can absorb the most heat from the laser. Light-skinned people tend to get better results because the contrast between dark hair and light skin also allows for easier heat absorption.
Although it is still a viable procedure for people with dark skin or those with light hair, the results will vary.
If you are pregnant, nursing, or have other factors that might prevent you from having laser hair removal, we can work together to find an alternative hair removal option.
Benefits of Hair Removal Laser Treatments
When you get a laser hair removal procedure, results will last longer than they would if you turned to waxing or shaving. People also prefer laser hair removal over electrolysis because it requires fewer treatment sessions, and there are no risks of ingrown hairs.
It is also a more precise option than other hair removal treatments and can treat most areas of the body where you may have unwanted growth.
Treatment sessions are also short, with underarm hair removal taking about 20 minutes and legs and arms taking about an hour. It also saves you time in the long run because you do not have to spend those extra minutes shaving.
You also have the option of shaving in between treatments, so you do not have to wait for hair to regrow as you would have to do with waxing.
Preparing for Laser Hair Removal
It all begins with a consultation with our experts. We will review your medical history and assess the areas you want to be treated. If you have had skin disorders, if you take medications, or if you have had hair removal procedures in the past, let us know. We will also take pictures for before-and-after comparisons.
During the consultation, we will also discuss the number of sessions you will need to achieve the results you want and will go over the costs you can expect.
To help you prepare for treatment, we ask that you stay out of the sun. Wear sunscreen leading up to the treatment and avoid any skin creams that darken your skin. If you have had a recent tan or dark skin, we may recommend a skin bleaching cream.
Avoid getting other hair removal procedures done, including waxing, plucking, and electrolysis, for at least four weeks before your laser hair removal treatment.
We also recommend you do not take blood-thinning medication, but always consult with your doctor before stopping any prescribed medications. Two to three days before your appointment, shave the treatment area because laser hair removal won’t work if the hair is larger than a grain of rice.
During the Procedure
When you arrive at our location, we will clean the treatment area and give you protective eyeglasses to wear throughout the hair removal laser procedure.
We will then press a handheld laser instrument to your skin. The laser will pass through your skin to the hair follicles, heating them to inhibit hair growth.
How long the session takes will depend on the size and location of the treatment areas.
After Laser Hair Removal
We recommend that you apply an ice pack to the area throughout that first day. Wear sunscreen even if the day is cloudy, and do not use a tanning bed for at least six weeks after the procedure.
You can expect to see hairs falling out within the following days. Some people see increased hair growth in the treatment area, requiring more sessions. This is because not all hair follicles react in the same manner to the first treatment of laser skin removal.
Once you finish all of your sessions, you will need a yearly touch-up procedure.
